I have been practicing as a CPA in Central Florida since March 2000. During those years I have assisted individuals and small businesses with accounting, payroll, tax planning, business formation and taxation.
Prior to practicing in the field of accounting my experience includes four years of management experience with what at the time was a small outfit called Ruby Tuesdays. Starting as a waiter working my way through college, I was promoted to bartender and almost immediately into management. My time with Ruby Tuesdays was extremely valuable in learning and understanding how to manage a profitable business. I was a 25 year old General Manger running a $1.25 million restaurant with 40 employees. I was grateful for the opportunity that the owners of Ruby Tuesdays afforded me but I felt the need to continue with my education and returned to the University of Florida to complete my undergraduate degree.
Upon graduation, I landed a position in Orlando as a marketing manager with a national company based in Wisconsin. My second year of employment, I was nominated as marketing manager of the year and subsequently asked to serve as the corporate Marketing Trainer. Not prepared to relocate to the home office in Wisconsin, I chose to keep my position in Orlando. I was soon persuaded to take a similar position with another company in Miami. I worked with that company in Miami as Vice President of Marketing as well as President of a subsidiary spin-off company. Our clientele consisted primarily of hospitals and physician groups and my territory extended from Miami to Jacksonville. Those were valuable learning experiences in the medical industry.
Not convinced that I was in the field that satisfied my skills and desires, I sought out a professional career counselor at Rollins College to whom I will be forever greatful. His testing pointed out that I would be happiest in an accounting career. After a good measure of denial, I returned to college in Orlando to the University of Central Florida and completed the necessary 36 hours of accounting required to sit for the CPA exam. Determined as ever and driven to succeed, I was able to pass the CPA exam on the first sitting in November 1999. I completed a Master of Science in Taxation the following year.
Having worked with a firm in Orlando and another in New Smyrna Beach, I found myself at a crossroads deciding whether to pursue a career in public or private accounting. By chance, an aquaintance at the local chamber of commerce made me aware of a small tax practice for sale in the neighboring city of Edgewater. I purchased that tax practice a month later, December 2001, and I have never looked back.
I thoroughly enjoy what I do. I realize there is a better than fair chance that I was dropped on my head as an infant, but I enjoy accounting, taxation and serving my clients.
